Different kinds of smoothies are made around the world. A smoothie can contain fruit juice with crushed ice, yoghurt or just crushed fruit. Our expertise and passion is fruit and therefore the smoothies of the fruit lab contain just the best fruit. A fruit lab smoothie is made of squeezed and crushed fruit, which gives the product a thick structure. Our smoothies can be enjoyed as a healthy snack because of the filling quality.
In what flavours is the fruit lab available?
We have 13 different tastes. Outspoken delicious tastes; bitter, sour and sweet. See "discover our tastes" for a description of all tastes.
What is "the smaakkubus" and how does it work?
The smaakkubus is a model to define food and beverages based on 2 "universal tastefactors": mouthfeel and flavour richness. In combination with the research center of taste in Wageningen the fruit lab develops and tests new tastes and codes all the product based on 3 factors: sweet, sour and flavour richness. So if you don't know a product and like to explore this, the fruit lab can help you by giving the main specifications of it.
How is the fruit processed?
It all starts with the buying of fruit. Our buyers fly across the world to visit the country sides of the best fruit farmers in the world. These fruit farmers are all EURECAP-certified to guarantee the quality and to be sure that they follow the legislations. During the harvest the fruit is picked manually and placed in boxes or crates, then placed into containers to be shipped overseas immediately. At arrival the fruit first undergoes a clearance. Oranges for example are checked on size, taste, PH-value, sugar value and quality. Then the fruit is stored at the right temperature to prevent the ageing process.
The citrus fruit is checked again, with use of a conveyer belt, on imperfections and is washed with brushes. Then the squeezing starts. This cannot really called squeezing, because we have the technique to suck out the citrus fruit. This way the ethereal oils don't find their way into the juice and prevents the bitter taste. After this the juice is stored in cooling tanks for further processing.
The valencia orange and the ruby red grapefruit are bottled immediately afterwards. The other flavours consist of 2 or more kinds of fruit and need to be mixed. For these flavours the fruit, for example the senga sengana strawberry and the hayward kiwi, is crushed. The crushed fruit is mixed with orange- or applejuice into our distinctive flavours. After the mixing the juices are filled into the bottle by one of our automatic filling lines and foreseen with a cap, production code and best before date.
From which countries does the fruit lab sources their fruit?
From all over the world, where we can get the best fruit, but if we can source it from close by, that will be our preference. For example our blackcurrant is coming from the Dutch province Zeeland. But the senga sengana strawberry is coming from Poland, valencia oranges come from Florida and the alphonso mango from India
Can I buy the alphonso mango in a grocery store as well?
The alphonso mango is the richiest mango there is in taste, but it's not the best looking one. Therefore this mango will be hard to find in a consumer store, because appearance is part of the deal. But if you can find one please let us know, so we can inform other fruitlovers.
Does the fruit lab juices and smoothies contain added sugar?
No, the fruit lab stands for pure, fresh and the ultimate best. For us this means very obviously no sugar added or any other conservatives added. Actually so obvious that we even felt we didn't have to put all these redundant claims "no sugar, no additives etc" on the packaging. Just to be sure, fruit always contains natural sugars.

For all kids who enjoy to drink these smoothies. The packaging contains 180 ml, where experts recommend that children under 6 years do not drink more than 120 to 180 ml per day. Young kids between 7 and 18 years may consume between 240 and 350 ml.

Acids in food and soft drinks can effect tooth enamel, so brushing the teeth immediately after consuming acidic food and drink is not recommended. A glass of water after drinking the smoothies can help to prevent dental erosion. And drinking through a straw, which is included, is also better: teeth will have minimal contact with the drink.

These smoothies are slighty pasteurized. Pasteurization is a simple treatment that is known of milk, a perishable product as well. When Fruity King pasteurizes her products it is a mild pasteurisation, which won't affect the taste. The shelf life will be extended and therefore it becomes easier for kids to take it to school and drink it during the day.
